To assess a more complete picture of the funding of the climate debate, CRC reviewed the spending of environmental groups. In an analysis that echoes the findings of a 2011 study by Matthew C. Nisbet, we used Brulle and Nisbet’s methodology to determine the total income of organizations advocating for policies and regulations in response to climate change. See the note below on the criteria used to include organizations in this analysis.

Methodology: Environmentalist organizations were selected from two sources. First, a search was executed using the FoundationSearch database for recipients of grants related to “climate.” Grantees that appeared on Robert Brulle’s list of skeptical organizations were then excluded. Second, the website of the People’s Climate March held in Washington, D.C., in 2014 was consulted, and non-labor-union organizations listed as supporters were included. For every organization, revenues and expenditures for tax years 2010 and 2014 were taken from IRS Forms 990 available at online nonprofit research databases.
